As time passes through the grief journey, I think sometimes we can become even more thankful for memories spent with family. I do believe our lives should be an overflow of gratitude. However, our thoughts still seem to return to what is missing. Our precious someone we lost. If you have experienced loss, you can relate to that empty feeling of loneliness. The idea of not being a couple anymore, being your own chauffer, or even doing all the thinking on your own. It’s just difficult as you make the transition from what was.
Someone said, “In these moments of heartbreaking grief, I remember the only reason we have an empty space is because we were blessed with someone who loved us so beautifully it occupied an entire part of our soul.”
My kids suggested I get a dog for companionship in an empty house. Well, I am so happy I did. Sir Winston has been my little furry companion since March 20, 2022. Afterall, studies show that dogs can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, ease loneliness, encourage exercise and improve your all-around health. Who wouldn’t be for that? But I would have never guessed that God would somehow use my pet to guide me in a truth.
Early one morning a thunderstorm followed by loud lightning strikes woke both of us up recently. Sir Winston seemed extremely anxious and was so nervous. As I picked him up wrapping a blanket around him, he was continuing to shake uncontrollably. I tried to calm him by telling him it’s just a storm, that it’s going to be all right. It will be over soon. I’ve got him and I know what I’m talking about. That’s when it happened…...just like that a calm voice came over me and seemed to say, “That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you…..this is just a storm right now, it will be over soon. I’ve got you and you’re going to be ok; trust me I know what I’m talking about.” The tears came rolling that morning. A reminder to keep trusting God in all things, do not be anxious about anything (Phil. 4:6-7).
Do you need to hear that today?
Here's the truth: God can impart truth to us anyway he wishes even through a pet. Progress has little to do with speed but much to do with direction. Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path. Being open to God’s quite calm voice. By the way, as for Sir Winston I discovered dogs can have a problem with thunderstorms. Amazon always comes through. He received an anxiety dog blanket from me as a gift within a few days. We are prepared for the next storm. 😊
Blessings,
Sharon
