"Let’s do more in 2024”…….more of what you say? I would like to challenge you to give more encouragement and compliments to others.

The book of Proverbs provides us with results of encouraging words spoken to others. A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver (25:11). Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones (16:24).

Even Mark Twain once said, “I can live for two months on a good compliment.”

It was years ago just shorty after I was married that a friend at our local church gave me such an encouraging compliment of something they saw in me that I continue to do today. The right compliment and encouragement at the right time can change a person’s life as they recognize their potential.

Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and sometimes we can cast judgment to point out flaws in others. When we are tempted to do that I would suggest stopping to THINK. Use the acronym to help you:

Is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, or Kind.

Several years ago, I did challenge myself to give encouraging notes via snail mail to others at least twice a week beyond what was expected of me on the card sender list at church. I had so much fun that I think I received more joy than the receiver. I kept track and sure enough over 100 encouraging notes went out from my desk that year.

A few encouraging words such as: I love you, you did a great job today, I love spending time with you, your laughter brings me so many smiles, your character shines through in what you do, and I am so proud of you can bless a person more than we could ever imagine. Proverbs 3:27 is a good reminder for all of us to not withhold good from those who are deserving when it is within our power to do so.

Act as if what you do makes a difference because it does.  With just a simple stroke of a pen, an email, or text may we all give the gift of encouragement to others…..”Let’s do more in 2024!”
